A short walk from the Plaza is Sacsayhuaman, a citadel built by Incan Emperor Pachacutec in 1538.
5) Machu Picchu, Peru
Machu Picchu is a 15th century Incan site that’s often called the lost city of the Incas. It was built high in the Andes Mountains and is considered one of the most important historical sites in South America. It’s a remarkable feat of architecture and engineering, not to mention extremely scenic.
Machu Picchu can be reached by train or by foot, which leads many people to hike to it from nearby towns like Aguas Calientes.
